Romero wins Iberia Parish sheriff’s race

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – Iberia Parish will have a new sheriff for the first time in over a decade.

In unofficial results from the La. Secretary of State’s Office, with 64 precincts of 64 reporting, “Tommy” Romero wins with 12,148 votes (52 percent). Opponent Murphy Myers trailed with 11,096 votes (48 percent).

Both men are registered Republican. Romero will replace Sheriff Louis Ackal. Myers and Romero defeated four other challengers, Roberta Boudreaux, Joe LeBlanc, Fernest “Pacman” Martin and Clinton “Bubba” Sweeney.

In early voting results, “Tommy” Romero led with 4,199 votes (51 percent). Opponent Murphy Myers trailed with 4,081 votes (49 percent).

Unofficial voter turnout was 49.6%
