Vermilionville hosting 2023 Creole Culture Day June …
Creole Culture Day is coming up soon – Sunday, June 11, from 10 AM – 4 PM at Vermilionville. It is a Free family-friendly celebration of all the contributions the Creole culture has made to Acadiana. There will be live music all day, from Cedryl Ballou and the Zydeco Trendsetters, Donna Angelle and the Zydeco Posse, and Herb Green percussion… plus a Zydeco jam. There will also be art, crafts, food demonstrations, poetry from Jonathan Mayers, the Poet Laureate of Baton Rouge and he's also an artist and expert on Creole language – plus Joe Hall will speak on the history and evolution of Creole and Zydeco Music.
Lena Charles of Opelousas, will be honored as this year's recipient of the Richard Catalon Sr. Creole heritage award. Ms. Lena is a cultural innovator, who has served as president of the Southern Development Foundation and originated the Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival. She's been chair of the Board of Opelousas Downtown Development District, and received the St. Landry Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the Woman of Heart Award from her local United Way. The Creole Heritage Award was established in 2004 honoring one of Vermilionville's first artisans, Richard Catalon Sr.
