At least one digital billboard has appeared in Lafayette expressing opposition to the upcoming PARCC standardized tests.

Meanwhile, the Lafayette Parish School System has received notice from 69 parents that their children will not take the exams when they start next week. Tom Spencer, the district’s accountability director, said additional opt-outs were coming in on Friday.

The billboard is at the intersection of Johnston Street and Camellia Boulevard. It shows a student next to the phrase “I am a test score.” The words “test score” have a red line through them, and the word “student” written above. It also contains the phrase “Opt Out of PARCC” and a website address, optoutlouisiana.org.

The website is a blog that features posts on how to opt out of PARCC, as well as a link to donate money for the billboards.

Attempts to contact representatives from Opt Out Louisiana were not immediately successful Friday morning.

Louisiana school districts, including Lafayette, will begin administering PARCC on Monday to students in third through eighth grades. It will cover English and math standards and skills, and is replacing the state’s LEAP test.

Proponents of the test say it more closely aligns to the Common Core standards and will give parents and teachers a clear indication of how well students understand concepts and can express ideas. Opponents have said the tests can be difficult and unclear and are not a true measurement of student learning.
