SAVANNAH, GA (AP) – A 76-year-old former Catholic priest has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping two middle-school-age children in South Carolina four decades ago.
Wayland Yoder Brown pleaded guilty Tuesday in Beaufort County to nine counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
Prosecutors say he took two boys from St. James Catholic School in Savannah, Georgia, across the state line between 1978 and 1988 and raped them in an abandoned train depot, a church and other places. One victim was as young as 11.
Solicitor Duffie Stone says Brown wore his priest collar during the attacks and then prayed the rosary.
Brown already served time in prison for sexually abusing two boys in Maryland. Pope John Paul II dismissed him from the priesthood in 2004 after that conviction.
