A hearing to determine the qualifications of three Opelousas alderman candidates took place today at the St. Landry Parish Courthouse.
Derrick Comeaux is the candidate who called their qualifications into question.
“If you do not live here, if you do not vote here, you do not try to attempt to run for office here,” says Comeaux.
The three candidates disqualified included Joe Effinger, Gina Rideau, and Charles Manuel.
The main reason for disqualification coming down to location, with some candidates residing and working outside of city limits.
Comeaux says previous aldermen have not met the qualifications to be in office.
A trend he says he hopes will stop.
“Somebody needed to stand up. It is the just and right thing to do,” says Comeaux.
Comeaux himself says he plans on running in the coming election.
