Special meeting for Opelousas budget coming on Friday

Inside of Opelousas City Hall tomorrow evening, a meeting to try to pass the budget for the next year will take place.

After years past of having postponed budgets and rocky starts, it is more important than ever to have a smooth go this year.

“I don’t see any reason why they would not pass the budget,” says Tatum.

That may sound familiar to Opelousas residents considering last year’s budget didn’t pass until October.

Before that, the 2016 budget didn’t pass until February of 2017.

So you can see why there’s reason to be skeptical.

What makes this year different?

“Everybody was pretty much under budget and we Ended up at the end of everything with a $2 million dollar surplus,” says Tatum.

Tatum says the special meeting was called to get a head start this year to avoid another postponement.

He also says this surplus should make it hard to turn the budget proposal down, with the majority of the plan already in place.

“The street project being done, the infrastructure project being done,” says Tatum.

Back in October, Tatum had this to say about why the budget was held up.

“Certain council members are continuing to try to stop us from moving forward.”

This time, that’s still up in the air he says.

“I don’t know in terms of if their mindsets have changed, would say well we need to save the money for a rainy day well you can’t keep saving the money for a rainy day and not fix what needs to be fixed in the city,” says Tatum.

Tatum says the budget will be voted on August 14th.
