NEW ORLEANS – The body of a woman who was originally reported missing last October has been found, and her death has been ruled a homicide, police announced Wednesday.

Jean Stokes, 76, was reported missing from her home in the 4900 block of Good Drive by her family on Oct. 13, 2017. Family members told police they last had contact with Stokes by phone two days earlier.

Stokes’ vehicle was found Oct. 24, 2017, on Dwyer Boulevard near A Street.

During the family’s relentless search for Stokes, a $5,000 reward was being offered for any information leading to her whereabouts.

Former state Rep. Austin Badon, who helped the family with the search, said it was a bittersweet discovery.

“The family is grieving. Half the tears are from sadness, but the other half are from relief,” he said.

The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab compared Stokes’ DNA to remains that were found in New Orleans East. Those samples matched.
