UPDATE: Statement from Kenner Mayor Ben Zahn on Nike Ban.
“That memorandum divided our city, and placed Kenner in a false and unflattering light on the national stage,” said Zahn. “I am passionate about my country and the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day… My patriotism will not waver.”
ORIGINAL: Kenner Mayor Ben Zahn has rescinded his Nike ban citing advice from the city’s legal counsel.
According to WWL-TV, Zahn says again he did it to protect taxpayers and did not intend to target people of color — when asked what he would say to people who felt hurt by it.
Zahn made the announcement during a press conference Wednesday,.
On Sept. 5, Zahn sent an email to the city’s recreation department director restricting the purchase of Nike apparel at any sports recreation facility.
That was two days after Nike began an advertising campaign starring Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who two years ago was the first NFLplayer to kneel during the national anthem to protest police violence against people of color.
Developing story. More to follow.
