CENTRAL LOUISIANA, La. (KALB) – A local grocery store company is taking some heat on social media after they sent out what some say is a politically charged ad mailer. The ad from Mac’s Fresh Market referenced the recent border wall controversy on the national level.
Here’s what it says, “Heaven has a wall, a gate and a strict immigration policy. Hell has open borders. Let that sink in.”
It’s not unusual for the grocery store company to put religious or political messages on their sales ads, but this one struck a nerve on Facebook.
Facebook comments included, “how about we build a wall around your store?”
“Wow, what a horrible message.”
“We are also checking out your racism and fake religion.”
We reached out to Mac’s Fresh Market owner Reggy McDaniel, who said it’s about faith for him.
“That’s my meaning of the whole thing is are people prepared to go to heaven or are they not,” said McDaniel. “I thought it was a perfect time because everybody is talking about the border, some people want it, some don’t want us to have one. The only thing I was shocked about was that it’s racist. I have never in my life been accused of being a racist, I’m 70 years old I haven’t evolved into one.”
However, for others, it’s not a big deal. Some said he has a right to his opinion.
“It’s his opinion, people shouldn’t judge him by what he has to say, it’s freedom of speech,” said Christian Pace, Alexandria resident. “I like Mac’s, they are a great store.”
“I don’t think it’s a big deal, people believe in what they believe in,” said Derrycka Hall, Ferriday resident.
“If I used a political message and I’m very aware it’s political, to highlight Jesus Christ, then I’m guilty of it,” said McDaniel.
Others on social media choosing to boycott the store saying “I’ll no longer shop in your store” and “I will no longer spend money on any of your products.”
“I appreciate them shopping with me, but this is America they have the privilege of shopping where they want to,” McDaniel said. “All I can do is tell them my case if they want to describe me in some kind of way that I am someone who is not worthy to shop with, I’d be shocked.”
McDaniel said he will continue to put messages on his ad mailers in the future.
