PARKS, La. (KLFY) – An Acadiana teen is battling a rare form of cancer. It wasn’t until about two weeks after a car accident last year, when his knee began to hurt, leading to the cancer diagnosis.

These days, 18 year old Traylon Broussard can’t move around very easily. He’s confined to crutches as he undergoes radiation treatments for his knee.

“They thought it was just a fracture or something, or just inflammation in my leg. It turned out it was something else,” said Broussard.

Traylon was in a car accident in May 2018. His knee began to ache a couple of weeks later. After months of testing, MRIs and biopsies, doctors found tumors.

“Turns out to be it was my whole leg, all the way to my toes. They thought it was my knee but it’s all the way to my toes,” said Broussard.

In November he found out the tumors were cancerous. Broussard was diagnosed with epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Epithelioid hemangiondothelioma, also called EHE, are very rare cancerous tumors The tumors most commonly appear on soft tissues, the liver, lungs and bones, affecting only about 2 percent of kids and teens.

“I try to act like it’s not there. I know I have it but I act like it’s not there because it’s too hard. There’s many nights I cry on my mama. I cry for days. I know crying is not going to help, so all I do is pray,” said Broussard.

His mom Tamika Broussard said prayer is essential to helping her son through treatment.

“I mean me as a parent, it’s hard for me but it’s harder for him. I have to keep my strength for him. That’s what I do,” Tamika Broussard said.

After his radiation treatments finishes, Traylon said doctors will remove the tumors surgically but says there is a risk they may have to remove his entire leg.

“If none of this works then I will probably be losing my leg. That’s why I pray everything works,” said Broussard.

Traylon is a student at Breaux Bridge High. He continues to take classes online while he travels back and forth to Baton Rouge for treatment.
