OPD: Student who caused lockdown at Opelousas Jr. High brought fully-loaded gun to school, faces 7 charges

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) — UPDATE, 4:15 p.m.: Monday morning, a student was apprehended at Opelousas Jr. High for allegedly bringing a fully-loaded handgun to campus. The student is now facing seven weapons-related charges, according to the Opelousas Police Department.

The student faces the following charges:

  • Illegal carrying of weapons
  • Illegal carrying of firearm in school free zone
  • Illegal possession of firearm by a juvenile
  • Aggravated assault with a firearm
  • Aggravated assault upon a peace officer
  • Resisting an officer
  • Terrorizing

At approximately 8:40 a.m., a call was received by OPD that a weapon was on the campus of Opelousas Junior High School.

The administration immediately called for a lockdown and along with the School Resource Officer, they were able to remove the threat by apprehending the student with the weapon.

A fully loaded handgun was recovered from the student.

ORIGINAL, 10:30 a.m.: Opelousas Jr. High was placed on lockdown Monday morning after a report of a weapon on campus, according to a press release from the St. Landry Parish School Board.

The student who was reported to have a weapon was apprehended, and the lockdown was lifted.

No students, faculty, or staff were harmed.
