To understand the 2017-’18 Ragin’ Cajuns, you have to understand, this team is together and have been for a long time.
That’s in large part due to a summer trip to Cuba, where they faced the Cuban national team and the Cuba junior national team.
That trip was the catalyst for a record-breaking season for the Cajuns.
Louisiana started with a loss at Ole Miss, but then proceeded to win 10 of the next 12 including two in the Cayman Islands, and started a record-breaking streak of winning home games.
The Cajuns won 14 home games and 26 games overall in the regular season, a school record.
The Cajuns, have only 5 losses this season.
Three of those losses came early, in the non-conference schedule.
Louisiana got right back on track with a seven-game winning streak.
That was just in time for the start of the Sun Belt Conference.
The wins began to pile up, 10 in a row, thanks to the play of 5 seniors on this team.
A loss at Georgia State halted the dominance, but, the Cajuns proceeded to win six of their last seven games to lose out the regular season.
The final regular season loss is something head coach Bob Marlin says might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
“It was good for our guys to take a punch in the mouth and refocus going into the tournament.
We’re excited to be the number one seed and look forward to going to New Orleans, “Marlin explains.
To make it to the big dance, the Cajuns will have to win their first Sun Belt tournament title since 2014.
Coach marlin knows the depth of this team will come into play.
“We do have the best depth in the league. Depth is the best thing, we’ve rebounded the ball well in the past. Our defense has been good, it wasn’t very good last week and we need to refocus and make sure we cover people,” Marlin says.
The Cajuns will play Texas State on Friday.
