A 6-0 season-opening weekend, punctuated by a sweep of Pac-12 foe Cal, has lifted Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball into a higher slot in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.

Louisiana moved up two spots from its preseason ranking in the NFCA poll, climbing to No. 13.

The Ragin’ Cajuns made their largest gain in the ESPN.com/USA Softball ranking, rising up five spots from their preseason selection to No. 13 in the Week 1 edition.

Louisiana opened the 2019 season, the second campaign under Gerry Glasco‘s guidance, last weekend with dominant pitching performances and powerful swings in outscoring foes 65-4 in the Ragin’ Cajuns Classic at Lamson Park.

Seven different players contributed at least one home run, led by three from Lexie Comeaux and two from Raina O’Neal, as the offense generated 10 homers and 25 total extra base hits.

In the pitching circle, Summer Ellyson posted four wins and yielded only four runs in 25 innings and freshman Kandra Lamb started off her collegiate career with back-to-back no-hitters.

No. 13 Louisiana returns to Lamson Park on Friday in the opening round of the 33rd Annual Louisiana Classics facing Jackson State at 4 p.m. and Austin Peay at 6:30 p.m. Both games will air on SportsRadio ESPN 1420-AM and be streamed live at RaginCajuns.com/Watch.

The tournament, which begins with round robin before bracket play starts Saturday afternoon, closes out the Ragin’ Cajuns’ season-opening, 11-game homestand.
