Newsfeed Now for April 2: Prison reform push in DC; Dying couple’s last wish

Newsfeed Now

On Newsfeed Now for April 2 we started with talk in the nation’s capital about prison reform. A bipartisan bill designed to reduce sentences for non-violent convicted criminals already has the president’s signature. Our Washington Correspondent Mark Meredith joined us from DC with the latest.

Our second stop, at the 6:15 mark took us to Louisiana where an 8-year-old boy battling leukemia got a special surprise. He thought his parents were playing an April Fools’ joke on him when they told him he would become a police officer. Some local officers made it happen and the Duson Police Chief was with us via Skype to tell us all about it.

A different part of Louisiana was our next destination at 11:10 for the touching story of a local couple’s dying wish. After nearly 35 years of marriage, a terminal cancer diagnosis for both has them planning their dream wedding vow renewal. KTVE’s Randi Ayala gave us details on how the community is helping organize it.

Rounding out the show at 16:05 we dropped by West Memphis, Arkansas where a local racetrack has been turned into a full-fledged casino. Voters approved it in the last general election. WATN’s Rebecca Butcher filled us in on how Southland’s live table games are giving a big boost to the local economy.
