LASALLE PARISH, La. (Jena Times/KALB) – Students at Olla Elementary School in Lasalle Parish were evacuated after a bat was discovered in the school. The school will also be shut down on Friday because of the incident, according to a Jena Times report.

The students were evacuated and bussed to LaSalle High School after what Superintendent Janet Tullos said was a “rogue bat” that entered Olla Elementary’s campus.

The Jena Times report said the entire process is being overseen by Health Department officials, who ordered the evacuation. Tullos said the entire campus was inspected by health department officials during the past two weeks where prior to Thursday no evidence of any bats was discovered and it was cleared by the health department.

“What they are telling us now is that they believe this is a rogue bat that flew in from an open door,” she said. “We have pest control experts coming in tomorrow to examine the school and determine if this is the case. We should know something by the end of day tomorrow (Friday).”

Tullos said parents will receive “J-Calls” concerning the reopening of the school as soon as they receive word from the health department.

Olla Elementary will be closed to all personnel and students tomorrow (Friday, May 3) and no one will be allowed in until the entire facility is cleared by health department officials.
