WEATHER BLOG: Severe weather threat across Acadiana, what you need to know

Local

UPDATE:  St. Landry, Evangeline,  Rapides,  Avoyelles Parish.and Allen Parish are under a Tornado Watch until 7pm.

Original Story:

Unfortunately, it appears a more significant severe weather threat could be possible across parts of the state today, including Acadiana. A low pressure area will develop across eastern Texas today, moving north-northeast. This will lead to very strong south winds, possibly in the 15-28 mph range this afternoon. Clouds will be increasing through the day, but storm activity should hold off until the mid-afternoon/early evening hours.

This low pressure will also enhance wind shear through our atmosphere. This is when winds are changing direction and intensifying with height. This is needed for storms to gain rotation and become severe. We also have quickly dropping temperatures with height, which promotes wind damaging storms and large hail. For this reason, this is an all-mode severe weather event, with damaging winds, tornadoes, and large hail. Prime time to see storms will be from about 3pm until 9pm.

All of Acadiana is under an “Enhanced” Level 3 risk for severe storms, with a “Moderate” Level 4 risk being painted across the central parts of the state. A few stronger tornadoes could be possible, especially across the central parts of the state.

DON’T PANIC….Seeing posts on social media and wording like this from meteorologists can understandably scare some folks. It is just best to be weather aware and be prepared. If you live in a mobile home, it may be best to find more sturdy shelther with a friend of family member. Also, stick with KLFY and download the KLFY weather app to get warnings sent right to your phone. Do not travel in warned areas and take shelter when told to do so. If you follow this advice you’ll be fine!

To stay weather aware you can download the KLFY Weather App at the Google store by clicking here.

Or at the Apple Store by clicking here.
