Ville Platte residents say proposed utility rate hike will be tough pill to swallow

Ville Platte residents fired up over proposed increases in utility rates made their disapproval known at at town hall meeting Tuesday night. 

Mayor Jennifer Vidrine said the increases are needed to help sustain the department and services.

Vidrine added that city government is proposing an increase in sewer, water and garbage collection rates, and one resident says by as much as 35 percent.

That did not sit well with many.

Mayor Vidrine says they initally planned to adopt an amended ordinance and phase in the increase over a two year period.

Instead she tabled the adoption of the proposed ordinance saying they will hold several more public meetings and make adjustments as needed before final adoption.
