A fire destroyed the home of the Village of Maurice’s assistant police chief on Friday morning.

Assistant Police Chief Guy Nerren and his family were home asleep when his mobile home was engulfed in flames, Mayor Wayne Theriot said.

“Through the grace of God, Guy was able to get his family out without anyone being hurt.” Theriot said.

The home is a complete loss, according to Theriot. The origin of the fire has yet to be determined, he said.

“Guy told me that if it wasn’t for the smoke alarms his family would not have survived.” Theriot said.

“They have lots of friends around the village and we’re going to take care of them the best we can.”

An account has been set up at the Bank of Erath if anyone wants to help the family recover from the tragedy, according to Theriot.

“They can also stop by City Hall and give what they can if they are so willing.”
