Victim killed in Proctor & Gamble plant explosion identified

PINEVILLE, La. (KLFY) UPDATE: The worker killed in a fatal explosion at Procter and Gamble on Thursday morning has been identified.

The Jena Times reports that Allen Kendrick, 56, of Jena died when a piece of equipment Kendrick was operating inside the plant exploded and caught fire around 3 a.m.

Kendrick was well known in the Jena community for the being the director of the LaSalle Parish Community Choir, being a member of a Jena theater group called “Acting Up”, and for working previously as the band director at Jena High School, KALB reported.

ORIGINAL STORY: One worker was killed in an explosion Thursday at the Procter & Gamble plant in Pineville on Thursday.

The incident happened at 3 a.m. No other injuries were reported.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to investigate an explosion of a piece of equipment, that claimed the life of a company driver, authorities said.

Workers were sent home and P&G remained closed throughout the rest of the day.

Multiple residents told News 10 that this is the first time something like this has happened. They’ve never heard of a situation like this happening here.

Pineville resident Robin Bordelon said her ex-husband works in the facility.
“A hydrogen lift exploded at (the) plant and killed a guy in my department so I told him that myself and our boys were going to come and check in on him so that’s what I’m here for right now— me and the boys to check on my ex-husband,” she said.

The company has released the following statement about the deadly explosion: 

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the P&G Product Supply Family passed away at our Alexandria manufacturing facility in a tragic accident during the early morning hours of May 24, 2018. The safety of our employees is a top priority, and there is an investigation underway at this time. We are connected with the employee’s family and have expressed our deepest condolences. We will support them and all our Alexandria employees in this difficult time.”

As of this evening, the name of the employee killed has not been released.

Authorities are still investigating.
