UPDATE: Person of interest identified in Abbeville Police officer shooting

ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) – Authorities are searching for a suspect identified as Nahshon Ishmael Brooks, 29, of Abbeville, in connection of an Abbeville Police officer.

The shooting occurred in the 600 block of  North Gertrude Street shortly before 8:00 p.m.

The officer, identified only as female, is reportedly in a local hospital suffering with a collapsed lung.

Her condition is listed as stable, Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said Wednesday night. 

Witnesses said the shooting occured as the officer was conducting a traffic stop. 

 Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I’s Bureau of Investigations Air Support Unit, Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office, Abbeville Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Office are assisting with the investigation. 

State Police Troop I spokesman Thomas Gossen said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous and that anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact 911 immediately. 

NEW INFORMATION:

Nahshon Brooks’ past criminal background records show he was charged with attempted second degree murder in 2016. That charge was amended to aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon. Brooks pleaded no contest to that amended charge of aggravated battery. He also had charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying of a firearm in a firearm free zone in 2016. Brooks’ latest charge was criminal mischief in 2018.
