The uncle of the young man shot by a Lafayette Police officer speaks out.
Louisiana State Police report the shooting happened shortly after 7:00 p.m. in the 400 block of Hilda Street on Tuesday..
According to the preliminary investigation, the Lafayette Police Department was responding to "criminal activity."
Police say when they arrived they encountered Keion Bonner, 19 of Lafayette. At some point during the encounter the officer fired his weapon striking Bonner.
Mike Bonner of Lafayette says Keion is his nephew.
"If he was wrong, I wouldn't entertain that because the law has duties he has to do too. The law did it unprofessionally. He really shot him for nothing," adds Bonner.
Bonner lives directly across the street from the house where Keion was shot. Bonner says he was standing at the end of the road while Keion and two other guys were sitting on a porch.
Bonner says an officer known in the neighborhood arrived and started joking with Keion and the other two on the porch.
Bonner explains the other guys had guns. The officer told them to get rid of them and they did. Bonner says that's when Keion decided it was time to go.
"He hit Keion twice. Keion stood up and said why you shot me for. Keion jumped on the porch and tried to run into the house. When he opened the door there were three more shots," Bonner states.
Bonner admits someone on the scene had a gun; but he says it wasn't Keion. He says the officer who shot Keion had already told the guys on the porch to toss their guns and they did.
"The law really done it unprofessional and shot him for nothing," Bonner adds.
