UPDATE: Dollar General shooting suspect arrested, victim in critical condition

UPDATE: Deputies have arrested 23-year-old Joel Saenz for shooting a male victim in the head Wednesday night.

“Investigators have learned that the victim was in the Dollar General Store preparing to leave when he was approached by Saenz’s brother who started a fight,” Wendell Raborn, spokesman with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

 During the fight, Joel Saenz ran into the store and shot the victim once in the head with a handgun. Saenz left the store after the shooting and was located at his home by deputies.

  Investigators believe there has been and on going dispute between the victim and Saenz, said Raborn.

The victim is in critical condition in a Lafayette hospital.  Joel Saenz was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail for attempted second degree murder.

ORIGINAL STORY: One man is injured after a shooting late Wednesday night in Iberia Parish.

Deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene just before 10:00 p.m. in the 6000 block of LA Highway 14 at a Dollar General Store.

Upon arrival, deputies found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Major Wendell Raborn says the shooting stemmed from an argument that happened inside of the store.

Deputies were able to find a suspect, who is currently being questioned by investigators.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.

Raborn says the shooting remains an active investigation.
