Teen hospitalized after gunman opens fire on vehicle following prom after-party in Breaux Bridge

A 16-year-old Breaux Bridge girl was wounded when a gunman opened fire on a vehicle following a prom after-party early Sunday, Police Chief Rollie Cantu said.

Officers were called about 2:30 a.m. to the 300 block of Margaret Street near its intersection with Dauterive Street, also known as "The west side of Breaux Bridge," Cantu said.

When they arrived, Cantu said, they learned that five people had just left a prom after party in the area and were inside a vehicle when gunfire erupted.

The victim, a front seat passenger, was struck once in the arm however the bullet traveled to an area beneath her heart where it remains lodged, Cantu said.

The other 4 victims escaped unharmed and were able to transport the 16-year-old by private vehicle to a local hospital, he said, she was listed in guarded by stable condition as of his last report, Cantu said.

During their investigation, police were able to develop a suspect and a short while later, 18-year-old Peter D. Castille of Breaux Bridge was placed under arrest and charged with 5 counts of attempted second degree murder, Cantu said.

Until recently Castille was a student at Breaux Bridge High, however had been expelled following multiple incidents at the school, Cantu said.

No information about what led to the shooting was released.

This was not Castille's first run in with the law. Last year he was arrested on multiple felony charges after an investigation was initiated into a report of a missing female juvenile from the Breaux Bridge area.

He is behind bars with a $750,000 bond at this time, Cantu said.

The family of the victim spoke out to KLFY a short while ago.

"She was an innocent bystander, she's a sweet girl, track star and all around good person, please everyone keep her in your prayers, she's got to go to a Baton Rouge hospital soon to undergo surgery to remove this bullet from near her heart. Pray for us, pray for her." her aunt Mya Fontenette said.
