LAFAYETTE, La, (KLFY) A teacher at Truman Early Childhood Education Center is on leave tonight after being accused of inappropriately disciplining a student.

The mother of the five-year-old girl is taking some blame for what happened at Truman Early Childhood Education Center; not blame for the alleged abuse but for not noticing the signs leading up to it.

I just wish that I would have asked her more questions at home,” says Logan Angelle. She is the mother of the student.

She says her daughter often came home in the afternoon not wanting to return to school the next day.

She has been telling me that her teacher is really mean but I know she’s an older teacher, so she may be a little more stern than the teachers nowadays, so I just tell her to behave and listen to authority,” Angelle explains.

When asked about her initial reaction to the phone call, Angelle recalls: At first I really couldn’t understand what she was saying, so I put it on speaker. When I understood it I rolled out of bed so quick and said I’m on my way! I didn’t want to hear anything else.”

According to Angelle, she was told her daughter was yanked by the arm and grabbed by the face.

“As a mother, it hurts me that I’m sending my daughter to school with someone that I trust and she’s being abused.”

In the middle of a sensitive situation, both parents believe the administrator handled things professionally.

As a parent, she protected her daughter and that’s all we want when we send our children to school is to be protected by a grown-up Courtney Griffin, the student’s step-father said.

The school district was made aware of the allegations and the teacher is on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.

District four school board member Elroy Broussard weighed in.

Once the investigation is complete we’ll find out exactly what all the facts are and then we’re going to move on from there”, Broussard said.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriffs Office confirmed the teacher, Laura Delahoussaye, has been charged with one count of simple battery.

Delahoussaye was not arrested but was issued a misdemeanor summons.
