St. Mary Parish councilman arrested on drug and stalking charges

MORGAN CITY, La. (KLFY)- The District 7 councilman for St. Mary Parish was arrested today drug, illegal firearm possession and stalking charges. 

Earlier today, authorities searched the home of St. Mary Parish Councilman James Bennett, 50, as first reported in the Morgan City Daily Review

According to State Police, Berwick police contacted the Criminal Investigations Division’s Houma office back in April concerning a stalking investigation. 

“Bennett had previously been arrested by the Berwick Police Department earlier this year for stalking, but he continued to stalk his victim outside of their jurisdiction,” State Police Troop C spokesman Jesse LaGrange said today.

During the investigation, troopers reportedly watched Bennett continue “his pattern of stalking the victim in St. Mary Parish.”

Today, troopers and Berwick Police officers searched the elected officials home and seized several electronic devices along with firearms and schedule III steroids.

Bennett was arrested without incident booked into the St. Mary Parish Correctional Center the following charges: possession of schedule III drugs, possession of a firearm in the presence of CDS and stalking.

His bond was set at $3,500.
