St. Landry Parish Sheriff: Escaped inmate fled from authorities on stolen ATV

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY)- UPDATE: The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office has released additional details on the escape and capture of a work release inmate.

According to reports, McGee had been allegedly harassing his ex-girlfriend while on work release, and was speaking with deputies in the jail lobby when he fled on foot. Opelousas and St. Landry Parish deputies began a search in the area but were unable to locate McGee.

On February 11, 2019, a Mamou Police officer spotted McGee on an ATV in a field at the St. Landry Parish line at Hwy 13. A Mamou police officer and a deputy with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office pursued McGee but were unsuccessful in catching him, authorities said.

During the pursuit, it was reported a Mamou patrol unit, in a legal intervention maneuver, struck the ATV disabling it. The investigation revealed that the ATV was stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Ricky Myers Road in Eunice. Area agencies continued the search in both parishes for McGee.

On February 13, 2019, St. Landry Sheriff’s Office was notified that McGee wanted to turn himself in and that he would be at a local hospital to undergo treatment for injuries he sustained during his escape.

Detectives with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s took McGee into custody after he was medically cleared at a local hospital. McGee was interviewed, and later taken back to the parish jail where he was charged with simple escape and unauthorized use of a movable.

“We would like to thank the public and area law enforcement agencies for their assistance," St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.
