WELSH, La. – A temporary power outage is planned for the town of Welsh the night of April 22 as Entergy Louisiana continues work on a $106 million upgrade to its transmission system in Jefferson Davis Parish.

The planned outage will affect Welsh residents starting at 10 pm, on April 22 with the outage in Welsh lasting up to six hours. The outage follows the completion of Entergy’s work to upgrade the equipment and transmission lines that feed the city of Welsh. In addition, those Jefferson Davis Electric Co-op customers served by the Derouen substation will also experience a very brief outage associated with this work.

“Now that we’ve completed the upgrades, we can switch from the temporary power feed that has been in place since March 9 and return the town to its permanent power configuration,” said Chip Arnould, region manager for Entergy Louisiana.

“We regret the inconvenience this outage will cause residents of Welsh and the surrounding area, but they are a necessary component of meeting our commitment to strengthen and modernize our transmission system in southwest Louisiana,” Arnould said.

Entergy Louisiana is also coordinating its work with Jefferson Davis and Welsh public safety agencies.

The overall project covers approximately 900 square miles, almost all of which is within Jefferson Davis Parish and encompasses the construction of some new transmission lines as well as rebuilding many existing lines. Both the new and rebuilt sections of line will use steel structures that can withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour and employ reinforced high-voltage wire that will move power more reliably and efficiently. In total, the project will add or upgrade over 58 miles of transmission and distribution lines. Depending upon weather and other variables, the project is scheduled to be completed by February 2020.
