Neighbors upset after water line breaks while digging for fiber cord

Local

Residents in a Lafayette neighborhood say they are upset after a water line was cut in their neighborhood during digging for an AT&T fiber wire.

The digging took place at 901 Omega St. in Lafayette.

Neighbors say it was around 7 to 8 p.m. last night when they noticed there was little to no water pressure in their homes.

That’s when they went outside to find what they call massive flooding that has left damages.

“The street is actually cracking where it wasn’t cracking and the sidewalks are actually sinking,” says neighbor Laura Wilson.

“We didn’t have these cracks that are in the concrete over here or this area right here where I’m standing sinking,” says neighbor Frank Faust.

“All the sand coming up is all the foundation underneath the street is messed up,” says neighbor Guy Harris.

Neighbors say several companies were involved in this mishandling of digging.

“I believe the mistake was made with the 811 people who mismarked the lines or didn’t completely mark the lines correctly,” says Harris.

Even with the mistake, the neighbors say they’re upset over the lack of communication to those living there.

“The problem is they never contacted us. They just came over and marked where they were gonna dig,” says Wilson.

“Had they come into the neighborhood and let us know what they were doing, we could have been prepared for the outcome,” says Harrison.

The neighbors say there are still areas marked that haven’t been dug, but they aren’t going to let that happen.

“They have not dug at my home yet and I will lay in the street and not let them dig,” says Wilson.

The neighbors say this is 1 of 5 lines damaged in this neighborhood alone.

They say there is a scheduled meeting with an AT&T regarding the incident on Monday.
