A candle light vigil in New Iberia Monday evening was briefly interrupted after a man allegedly armed with a rifle was arrested by sheriff deputies.

According to Major Wendell Raborn, around 9:40 pm Monday deputies were dispatched to the area of Mississippi St. at Cletus St. in reference to a male in the area carrying a rifle.

Raborn said there was a large crowd in the area due to a candle light vigil for the victims of recent shootings.

When deputies approached a group of subjects near a vehicle parked in the roadway, Raborn said the subjects walked away.

Inside the vehicle, in plain sight, deputies found two AR-15 rifles, an AK-47 rifle with the stock removed and a 22 caliber revolver, Raborn said.

A further investigation has revealed that illegal narcotics and more than 200 rounds of ammunition was found in the vehicle.

The owner, Derrick Adams was identified as the individual walking in the area with a rifle during the vigil.

Raborn said Adams was arrested for multiple charges including possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone, and possession of schedule III narcotics.

A passenger in the vehicle, Tremaine Lewis was also arrested for possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone.
