Lafayette man dies in early morning crash in St. Martin Parish

CADE, La. (KLFY) – State Police have identified the man who died in this morning’s crash in St. Martin Parish.

The crash happened around 8:00 a.m. on Smede Highway (LA 92-1) just east of Cade, La.

Master Trooper Brooks David said John Egle Jr., 28, of Lafayette died in the crash.

Authorities say Egle was driving east in a 2010 Audi A5 on LA 92-1, when for unknown reasons, he ran off of the right side of the road, hit an embankment and overturned.

Egle was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office.

Investigators do not know if Egle was impaired but toxicology samples were taken for analysis. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police wish to remind drivers that properly wearing your seatbelt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. David urged drivers to take one second to “buckle up!”

Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes, David said.
