LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – One local student is hoping to win a prestigious award named after one of music’s biggest icons.

Brewster Durbin is a Senior at Lafayette High School who recently entered the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and has made it to Session II, which is putting him up against one more entrant in his category: Hip-Hop.

He says the inspiration behind the song he entered, “$1”, came from seeing one of his friends set up a GoFundMe on social media to help raise funds for her father, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

You can hear his song below:

Now he’s asking for Acadiana to help him win the contest by voting for “$1”.

The song with the most votes receives one of the rare Lennon Awards and a possible shot at $20,000.

Voting is going on now through April 30 at the contest’s website, here.
