In St. Landry Parish, a police chase Sunday morning in Opelousas ended with the tragic death of an 11 year old girl.
News 10’s Rebeca Marroquin joins us in the studio with details on this developing story.
Bryla Bell has been identified as the 11 year old girl that died in that crash. She was originally reported missing Sunday by her mother who said she snuck out of the house through her bedroom window.
“Robbin Gradnigo : “Sure enough it was Bryla that was gone. So the momma got in the car to go after them, they took off and she followed them through town. they came all the way through town.”
After finding out her daughter had snuck out, Bryla’s mother chased after the truck she was in and called officials for help, her aunt said.
When Opelousas police approached the vehicle, two people jumped out of it and ran in opposite directions near the Walgreens Drug store on South Union Street.
Opelousas police tell me they then continued the chase of the vehicle.
“Sgt. Crystal Leblanc (Opelousas Police Department): “They were under, the assumption that the juvenile inside was being kidnapped, so at that point they tried to get the vehicle to stop. which later resulted in a fatality. Upon approaching the vehicle then is when they found that the 11 year old was actually the driver.”
Bryla’s aunt says she just wants the two young men involved to come forward.
“Robbin Gradnigo : “Whoever they are I wish they would just turn themselves in. or if somebody knows, come and tell, you know. because that child is dead. She’s dead and if they would see her in there, she’s messed up… she’s messed up..”
Officials are investigating to find out the identities and whereabouts of the two males… Anyone with information is encouraged to call 911 or the Opelousas police at 337-948-2500.
