Former major league baseball player and local gun shop owner– the story of their friendship

Local

Harry Smith, owner of Smith’s Gun Shop in Sunset met John Fetzer, former major league baseball player for the Boston Braves (now known as the Atlanta Braves) during a business transaction over a decade ago.

Since then, they’ve kept up with their friendhip over the years; talking on the phone almost daily and visiting whenever possible.

During this most recent visit, Fetzer wanted to give his good friend a gift– a picture of his days on the diamond.

And although Fetzer is now 93 years old, Smith says he hopes their friendship continues to grow for as long as possible.

“[I want to] meet with him for as long as he’s here and around here, either way. Who would not want to be with someone like that anyhow?” Smith said.

(John Fetzer was a pitcher for the Boston Braves from 1945 to 1946. It was during a baseball game in Cuba that Fetzer blew out his shoulder. He then continued his career in the minor leagues)
