FEMA finalizes flood insurance study for Lafayette Parish after 10-year mapping process

Local

Representatives from FEMA gathered in Youngsville Wednesday to answer questions regarding the new flood map.

Around 4,500 new properties in the area are now listed in flood zones, another 4,500 properties were removed.

FEMA started revising the Lafayette Parish map back in 2007. Until this latest revision, Lafayette Parish used a flood zone map from 1996.

“Back in 2007, with all of the growth that we’ve had, all the homes we were building, and new technology, FEMA started doing modifications of the maps. The current maps we have now are effective 1996, and we’ve grown a little since then.”

Once these maps go into effect, homeowners with a mortgage in the flood zone areas will be required to buy flood insurance by December 21.
