Domestic Violence awareness month candlelight vigil

In honor of survivors of domestic violence, October is proclaimed as Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.

The impact of domestic violence is wide-ranging, directly affecting society as a whole. The crime of domestic violence violates and individual's privacy, dignity, security, and humanity due to systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic control and/or abuse. Effective domestic violence intervention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social agencies, schools, religious organizations, law enforcement agencies and the business community. The problems of domestic violence are not confined to any group or groups of people but crosses all economic, racial, and societal barriers and are supported by societal indifference. Domestic violence intervention programs offer positive alternatives for families and encourage strong ties to their community. It is battered women themselves who have been in the forefront of efforts to bring peace and equality to the home.

In honor of survivors and remembrance of victims, we invite the community to attend the candlelight vigil sponsored by Faith House in collaboration with Lafayette Parks and Recreation.
