Abbeville City Council members voted four to one against placing red light cameras throughout the city Tuesday night.
Police Chief Tony Hardy presented the idea to the council nearly 6 months ago. Abbeville city councilman Francis Plaisance said he even considered the proposal when it was first introduced.
After research and feedback from the community on the Redflex cameras, the city’s attorney recommended the council not get the cameras.
“Police are trying to take a step back and rely on technology, sit a cop up here instead of a camera.” Said Joey Goulette, an Abbeville resident.
Plaisance says Redflex, the company who supplies the cameras, is currently facing litigation and other issues in many of the areas they are used in.
