4-year-old boy accidentally kills himself after finding gun, Oakdale police say

A four-year-old boy was fatally shot in Oakdale Saturday, according to Police Chief Joseph Lockett.

Lockett says officers were dispatched to Prater Street in reference to a subject being shot.

On arrival, he said, officers learned that a four-year-old boy located a loaded .40 caliber handgun inside the home.

For unknown reasons, the gun discharged and struck the child in the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Oakdale Police Department has issued the following statement:

Prayers for this family that endured a tragedy this morning, also for our community. As Law Enforcement we see and hear a lot of things, nothing preparers us for some incidents and we hurt along with the family. But we have a job to do and have to keep our heads together. Hug your children and grandkids, cherish that opportunity, tomorrow is not promised. God Bless this Family and our Community.
