Louisiana now fifth in the nation with per capita COVID-19 cases


BATON ROUGE, La. (KLFY)- Louisiana is now fifth in nation for per capita COVID-19 cases. 

Gov. John Bel Edwards was joined by Dr. Alex Billioux, state assistant secretary of health, during Wednesday’s press briefing to address the state’s rising cases, which was noted by Vice President Mike Pence and the White House Task Force that morning. 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched ‘Surge’ COVID Testing Hotspot Jurisdictions in Louisiana, Texas and Florida, which aim to provide 5,000 tests per day. 

Four locations in Baton Rouge will provide testing. You do not have to be living in the Baton Rouge area to utilize those federally operated testing sites, Edwards noted.

Alex Box Stadium parking lot
Gourrier Avenue
Baton Rouge, LA 70820

2.) Southern University
FG Clark parking lot
801 Harding Blvd
Baton Rouge, LA 70807

3.) Cortana Mall
9701 Cortana Pl.
Baton Rouge, LA 70815

4.) Fairgrounds at BREC’s Airline Highway Park
17200 Airline Hwy
Baton Rouge, LA 70118

Billioux said bars, industrial settings and restaurants continue to be the most subject to causing the virus’ spread.

Despite a statewide surge in cases, Edwards is not contemplating a mask order at this time, he said Wednesday.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued his statewide mask order on June 2. Local Louisiana parish governments including Orleans, Jefferson, and Baton have ordered their own mask mandates in an effort to curbs spiking cases and hospitalizations.
