UPDATE: (6/17/2) MONROE, La — On Thursday, June 11th, around 7:45 pm, 30-year-old Brittany Tucker shot and killed her neighbor. She then went back into her own home where she shot and killed her four young children before turning the gun on herself.
Monroe police say the gun she used was a 380 caliber Ruger LCP. Sergeant Charles Johnson says on June 6th, five days before the deadly shooting, Tucker went to a locally licensed firearm dealer and bought the gun. The Monroe Police Department has investigated Tucker’s ATF form 4473; This is the form you must complete to purchase a gun.
Item 11-f asks, “have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective or have you ever been committed to a mental institution.” Tucker marked no.
Investigators found that she may have provided what they’re calling “false information” to that question. Witnesses say not only had Tucker suffered mental health issues for years, but she also seemed to be experiencing a mental health crisis the night of the murders. Police aren’t saying which retailer tucker bought her gun from. We’ve reached out to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms for more details on this situation, we’re still waiting for a response.
UPDATE: (6/12/2020) MONROE, La. (KTVE/KARD) — Monroe Police Chief Reggie Brown has released more details surrounding last night’s apparent murder-suicide.
According to Chief Brown, the incident began just before 7:45 PM on Thursday night at the Parkview Apartment Complex and involved two shootings.
Witnesses say that 30-year-old Brittany Tucker had been experiencing mental health issues “for years.” According to those witnesses, Tucker was seen recently walking around with a gun and seemed to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
The first shooting took place in the parking lot. The victim, 20-year-old Antiesha Logwood, was talking with a friend when Tucker approached them and asked a question. Police say that Tucker then shot and killed Logwood before fleeing to her own apartment. Police also say that Logwood’s friend was not injured.
According to police, the second shooting occurred within Tucker’s apartment. They say that when Tucker went into her apartment, she killed her four children before taking her own life. The children’s ages range from 12 years old to only 6 months old.
Police say that Tucker purchased the firearm from a local gun store.
Officers are still investigating exactly how and why she was allowed to obtain the weapon.
Chief Brown is asking the public to call your local police department or 911 if you see someone with a history of mental health issues acting irrationally.
“Our hearts go out to her, to her mental state. We oftentimes depend on the community, who recognize people that are in a mental health crisis to give us a call so that we can respond and give them the help they need,” said Chief Brown.
