BATON ROUGE — An Angola lifer was tackled by guards as he tried to escape the notorious Louisiana State Penitentiary Wednesday, according to corrections officials.
Officials said they spotted prisoner Kristopher Schoeing break from a farm line about 2:15 p.m. and make a run for it.
A guard issued a verbal command to stop, but Schoeing continued to run.
The guard fired two warning shots before other guards were able to tackle and restrain him.
Schoeing is serving a life sentence out of Calcasieu Parish for aggravated rape. He has been locked up at Louisiana State Penitentiary since 2000.
Officials said the prisoner wasn’t injured by either gunshot and that at no time was he close to escaping from Angola.
Angola’s medical staff transported Schoening to the prison’s treatment center for evaluation by medical and mental health staff members, officials said.
An investigation is underway into the escape attempt.
