Baton Rouge mother arrested after 1-year-old child accidentally shot by sibling

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Police have arrested a 23-year-old woman after her 1-year-old child was accidentally shot by her 2-year-old child.

Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department confirm that Crystal Kinchen was arrested and charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Police were called to the intersection of Greenwell Springs and North Foster on Tuesday, November 15. The two children were reportedly alone in the vehicle and they say Kinchen was inside a nearby store with a male companion.

The 2-year-old boy reportedly picked up a gun that was left in the vehicle and was playing with it when it accidentally discharged and struck the 1-year-old girl.

The child was transported to the hospital by a personal vehicle and she is currently listed in critical condition.
