LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Aisha Ismail has owned Aisha’s Styling Salon on Verot School Road for 16 years.
She said her business took a big hit when crews were working on Verot School Road.
“We lost customers like crazy. I would say more than 50 percent of my customers,” Ismail said.
She said it was hard for customers to get to her and many didn’t want to deal with all the construction.
“I was so mad,” Ismail said. “I was so mad that you couldn’t talk to me. That’s how mad I was.”
The DOTD widened Verot School Road from two to four lanes from Feu Follet Road to Vincent Road.
The project area is about 3.2 miles.
All of the new lanes have been open for a couple of months.
Work on the project began in late 2015. The DOTD said the $35.5 million project is almost done.
DOTD District Administrator Bill Oliver said crews should finish re-striping the road next Monday and Tuesday.
The project will then be finished.
He said crews spent the past few months cleaning drainage structures and pipes, repairing cracked pavement, and completing sidewalks and driveways.
As for Ismail, she’s happy the major work is done and says her old customers and some new ones have come back.
“Sometimes when I’m passing by I don’t believe that this is Verot. I feel like I’m passing on Camellia. That’s how gorgeous this road looks,” Ismail said.
“We’re not getting any thanks but at least the complaints have slowed down so you know when things go quiet things are good,” Oliver said.
He said a few businesses have expressed their gratitude.
Again, the project will be considered finished once the re-striping is done next week.
