UPDATE: Two people are now confirmed dead after a recreational vehicle side swiped a passenger vehicle Sunday afternoon on I-10 westbound , near MM 78 in Crowley.

State Police confirm that both vehicles were traveling westbound when the crash happened around 1:30 p.m.

An initial investigation by State Police has revealed that the crash occurred as a 2000 Newmar motorhome was traveling west on Interstate 10 in the right lane and experienced a rapid tire deflation.

Police say the motorhome crossed into the left lane of travel and sideswiped a 2012 Honda Civic, operated by 34 year old Samuel Martinez Jr. of Fayetteville, NC.

After impact, police say the motorhome and passenger vehicle continued to travel off the roadway, struck a bridge guardrail, and then overturned into the median.

Despite the fact that both the driver and passenger of the motorhome were properly restrained, police say they suffered fatal injuries.

Troopers are working to determine their identity.

Both Martinez and a passenger were properly restrained, and were transported from the scene to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Eyewitnesses say a puppy dog named Kiya was also inside the vehicle but was able to escape uninjured.

Impairment is unknown at this time, and toxicology samples were taken from both drivers, the results of which are pending.

This crash remains under investigation.
