(This story has been updated to reflect that power will only be shut off if the floodwaters from the opening of the Morganza Spillway reach SLEMCO’s electrical equipment)

SLEMCO says it will have to shut off power to some areas  near the opening of the Morganza Spillway if the floodwaters come into contact, at eye level, with the meter bases and electrical outlets near their homes and businesses.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who will be affected by the expected opening of the Morganza Spillway. SLEMCO will not be allowed to enter areas that flood once the spillway gates are open. Residents of Krotz Springs, Butte LaRose, 3 Mile Lake, Catahoula, Stephensville and more, are most likely to be affected. Once water rises into homes, camps and in particular, meter bases, SLEMCO will be turning off power to prevent electrocutions and to protect sensitive electrical equipment.”

SLEMCO customers in the areas that will be affected should begin making plans now to move possessions and relocate valuable items, including food stored in freezers to higher ground, company officials announced.

“As soon as it is safely possible, power will be restored to the affected areas.”

The power will most likely be turned off neighborhood by neighborhood, not individually, the company says.

That means that elevated structures will be without power along with lower lying structures that may have flooded.
