LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Lafayette Police are searching for answers after a body was found behind an abandoned home on Hobson Street.

Caution taped lined the street as investigators surveyed the scene.

Lafayette Police were notified of the body around 9 a.m. Wednesday. The body was found by an abandoned home in the 400 block of Hobson Street between the Evangeline Thruway.

“Once on scene officers did find a black male in the rear of a residence here unresponsive, he was determined to be deceased at that time,” said Officer Karl Ratcliff.

The body was discovered unclothed and with injuries.

Officer Karl Ratcliff said the cause of death is still unknown.

“We’ve not ruled out foul play at this time. Investigators are on scene, canvasing the area, talking to people, trying to piece together the circumstance around the death.”

The identity of the man and motive are unclear.

Ratcliff said investigators are working with limited information.

“It is difficult when we don’t have eye witnesses, surveillance video, things like that, but it’s not something we haven’t been faced with before so I’m confident we will be able to figure something out.”

Ratcliff said once the coroner’s office conducts it’s investigation, police will have more answers.

“We can’t speculate on that. We’re going to let the coroner’s do their job to help us figure out exactly what happened.”

Residents in the area declined an interview, but did say they feel the violence could be connected to a number of abandoned homes in the area.

Several of the homes have been purchased by the state and are earmarked for the I-49 project.

Lafayette Police ask that if anyone has any information to contact the police department or dial 232-TIPS.
