Drag Queen Story Time in Lafayette was set for Saturday afternoon at SLCC, but after security concerns and lack of space, the controversial event was postponed indefinitely. Now, another group is claiming that they’re receiving threats.
Rich Penkoski with Warriors for Christ Ministry, the organization that filed the law suit against the story time event, says he and his ministry have received numerous threats of violence online. One of them read, “Do the world a favor… Kill yourself and your family. The world could use less stupid.” Others were too vulgar to repeat, and some have been so threatening he’s had to contact law enforcement.
Penkoski stresses that no matter what side you’re on, this hate speech is unacceptable.
He says, “It is inappropriate and it is mean and it is hurtful to say. Even to them. We can disagree and we can have dialogue back and forth but this kind of language from either side is completely and totally inappropriate. It solves nothing. All it does is create this atmosphere of hate.”
He encourages those who have been victims of online threats, no matter what their views, to report it. He says, “Go to the police. They [story-time supporters] deserve to have their safety intact as well. There’s no room for this for anybody.”
