NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) A New Iberia man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the death of a woman.

In Jan. before a jury trial was set to begin, Clarence Playton pleaded guilty to the death of Fabeka Hayes in May, 2020.

Authorities say Hayes was leaving her shift at Church’s Fried Chicken when she was killed.

According to 16th Judicial District Attorney Bo Duhé, surveillance video showed Hayes exit the building and then run back inside while other employees attempted to lock the door to keep Payton out.

He eventually gained entry to the building and shot Ms. Hayes in the head before taking her person and fleeing the area, Duhe said.

He was found hiding under a vehicle; the victim’s purse, phone, the murder weapon, and some bloodstained clothing was found at a nearby house, Duhe said.

He will also serve ten years at hard labor, without benefit of probation, parole, for the armed robbery.

Duhe said the sentences will run consecutively.
