IBERIA PARISH, LA (WAFB) – A New Iberia man was arrested and charged with aggravated arson after trying to set a fire in a home where several people, including children, were inside.

According to the Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal, Derek Landry, 37, was booked into the Iberia Parish jail on Sunday on the arson charge.

At around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, firefighters with the Iberia Fire District responded to a fire at a home in the 25000 block of Admiral Doyle in New Iberia. Firefighters, with the assistance of deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, put out the fire.

Landry had started the fire after locking himself in the bathroom. Deputies were called out to the home and tried talking to Landry through the bathroom window. At the time, Landry lit a pile of clothes on fire. Authorities said several people were in the home, including four children.

Once the fire was put out and Landry was taken out of the home, he was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Fire marshal deputies arrested Landry after he was released from the hospital.
