Monkey missing from New Iberia Research Center

A monkey is missing from the New Iberia Research Center.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, staff at the New Iberia Research Center became aware that a Rhesus macaque was missing due to a cage failure.

According to UL Lafayette Facebook page, the monkey was born at the center and weighs approximately 12 pounds.

It was sighted on Sunday morning near the New Iberia Sugarena before moving into a nearby wooded area, the post states.

The monkey is part of a breeding group that carries no transmissible disease, and although it is used to people it is not a pet and should not be approached.

Personnel from the Center are actively working on recapturing the animal, the post states.

Anyone sighting the monkey should not attempt to approach, capture or corner it.

Instead, please call 337-201-0105 or 337-281-4075.
