Some residents in Breaux Bridge have been waiting years to see memorial signs hung in honor of Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.
Three signs are waiting to be put up in these busy intersections along Berard Street. The Breaux Bridge Mayor says the DOTD has told the city they are scheduling a date to hang the signs, but no one knows the exact date yet. And some residents say this process is taking too long.
Vincent Alexander says he’s been trying to secure memorial spots for Doctor King in Breaux Bridge for the past three years.
“I believe the city did everything that they needed to do, but it’s the department of transportation and development that got us on hold since 2016 this is ridiculous,” said Alexander.
The memorial signs would be placed at the intersection of East Bridge Street and Berard, Martin Street and Berard, and Mills Street and Berard.
“We are not asking them to change La. 31 all we’re asking is to erect signs as a memorial Street, memorial highway just that part,” says Alexander.
News 10 spoke to a DOTD representative who says since the city bought the signs, a permit to hang them must be signed by the city and the DOTD. The rep says he will get in touch with the mayor tomorrow.
